Our luminaires have been installed throughout Madrid’s new Primark flagship store, which has been exclusively designed by Dalziel + Pow.  The iconic 133,000 sq.ft. flagship Primark building has been sympathetically refurbished to complement and highlight the existing architectural features whilst offering the very latest and best in lighting design from collaboration with LAPD.

The store in Madrid´s archetypal Gran Vía is Primark’s second biggest outlet in the world, after Manchester, with five floors featuring a range of women’s and men’s fashion as well as homeware. It is also the fashion store’s most beautiful building and dates back to 1910 with some exceptional original features such as the glass dome that bathes the shop in natural light. The clothes are displayed on galleries that have balconies looking out onto a central atrium. The Gran Via is renowned for its sweeping grand building architecture which showcases a number of early 20th century styles including Vienna Secession, Plateresque and Art Deco.

Hertfordshire-based lighting designers LAPD worked closely with Dalziel + Pow to specify and supply several different variations of YORI fittings throughout the store.  Mounted on 3 x circuit track, white YORI Maxi incorporating 35W metal halide lamps were used for mid-floor areas with narrow and medium beam optics with perimeters using 50W metal halide with the same narrow and medium beam optics. For darker environments in the store, such as menswear, black track and black YORI fittings with 35W lamps were used. The same fittings were also installed along the main walkways incorporated into recessed channels.

With limited atrium space on the ground floor, it was not possible to suspend track lighting so LAPD designed ‘pergola’ structures at the base of the atrium and track was surface-mounted to outrigger arms at the tops of the structures.  A large number of YORI 50W Maxi fittings were used with narrow beam optics which allowed LAPD to highlight merchandise on the mid-floor/outside the pergola structures that would have otherwise been left without accent lighting.

As the new store is part of Spanish Heritage and a Listed Building, there were further lighting constraints placed on suspending lights to the underside of the grand staircase sweeping from the ground to the first floor.  LAPD managed to overcome this hurdle by using YORI semi-recessed fittings to bring accent lighting close enough to the merchandise below.

Working to strict Spanish regulations and in addition to normal emergency lighting requirements, a third of all lighting on the sales floor had to be able to be reinstated immediately in the event of power failure.  To fulfil this requirement LAPD ensured that one third of all the metal halide YORI Maxi fittings were replaced with 30W LED versions of the same luminaire, using medium and wide beam IOS reflectors.  This was applied to all of the semi-recessed and suspended fittings on all the floors.

Ceiling height in the main entrance zone reaches 9000mm above fixed floor level so, in order to ensure minimal maintenance requirements here, all the YORI Maxi fittings in this area were specified with a narrow beam 30W LED lamp.

Further enhanced by the addition of a well-designed lighting scheme centred around YORI, the new Madrid Primark store offers a totally new concept for the retail world and provides customers with a unique, bespoke and ultimately thoroughly enjoyable shopping experience.
