The Grand Hyatt Jakarta first opened its doors in July of 1991. Located right in the heart of Jakarta, its strategic location at the roundabout of the iconic Welcome Monument led the hotel to flourish year after year. In May of 2016 illuminate was appointed to assist with the refurbishment of the hotel. The “Grand Cafe” which operates as the hotel’s all day dining closed for refurbishment in January of 2018 and opened with much celebration in May the same year.

To compliment the interior design concept of the restaurant – a representation of an Indonesian home, the lighting had to deliver a flexible installation which could be varied to deal with dining throughout the day, ensuring the right amount of light to make the diner fell comfortable whilst creating an overall homely atmosphere.

We wanted guests to feel encouraged to explore and pick a location they felt happy with, with its large footplate there were many opportunity to introduce different levels of ambience creating spaces that we hope would cater for a large varied audience’ says Berry (Partner at illuminate)

The areas were given a hierarchy from the meet and greet at the entrance through to the heat and drama of the open cook / buffet space and the more relaxed seating areas which also consisted of a drinks / servery area which required its own treatment.

It’s always interesting working on a food and beverage space as you not only need to be creative in your intent, careful of your colour temperatures, but you also need to establish lighting layers at an early stage, this ensures you have the flexibility in commissioning especially when table arrangements are changed’ say Kurniawati (Senior Designer at illuminate)

For this project Illuminate decided to use the adjustable version of the Mood M (80mm) in the retrofit type. The MOOD M is also available with high intensity Power LED by Cree and a wide range of accessories and versions to fit an incredible variety of projects and applications. In the Grand Café there are about 300 pieces of Mood downlights in white and black finish to fit the different type of ceiling’s materials and with the elegant conic plate as design choice instead of the flush or curved ones also available.

The flexibility of the Mood fixture combined with the support from Reggiani made the Mood fixture the right specification for this project, we are very pleased with the final outcome of the project and we will continue working with Reggiani’ states Berry (Partner at illuminate).
